Recently, we tested several Huawei home routers. The powerful platforms and attractive price are interesting. However, the software can not always satisfy demanding users.

In this article we look at the router Huawei WS831, which also has a second name “Honor Cube” in some sources.

This Honor Cube model has wired ports 100 Mbit/s (one WAN and two LAN), two wireless access points in the 2.4 and 5 GHz, and it supports the current protocol 802.11ac, and is equipped with a USB 2.0 port for connecting external storage devices.

In testing, we used the unlocated devices, so it was difficult to find even English letters on the box and in the instructions and in the web interface. Provided that this model is not on the manufacturer’s website, and not even any documents, it is possible that we will miss some of the features of the device.

Packing router has an almost cubic shape and unusual celadon. No technical information on it, apparently, except for references to a faster processor, support for 802.11ac and company management utilities for mobile devices.

The package includes the router power supply 5.1 V 2.1 A flat Gigabit Ethernet patch cable, a brief description, a warranty card and, as a bonus, the calendar for this year.

The body of the router is made of white glossy plastic. Its dimensions are 90 × 90 × 94 mm. The top cover is printed the name of the series – Honor.

On the front side is a button «Hi» with chrome rim and a built-in multi-color display, which probably used to connect wireless clients on technology WPS, and reset (with a long press).

Huawei E5786 is world’s first LTE mobile hotspot with LTE Advanced Cat6 and WLAN ac, and it’s one of the fastest mobile LTE router on the market. Thanks to good facilities and powerful battery, Huawei E5786 is popular with many users. However, there is also a small problem with the device, which annoys some users recently.

Huawei has announced the E5786 in February 2014 with the so-called WiFi Extender feature, a feature that we already know from many other Huawei MiFi routers. However, Huawei provides the appliance with different firmware versions, in which some of the WiFi Extender is disabled. In this article, I want to show how to flash the firmware of Huawei E5786 to the version which is equipped with the WiFi Extender.

 
On some forums, we has found a firmware for the Huawei E5786 LTE router, a user who has already integrated the WiFi Extender function. The firmware should be OK with both the original Huawei E5786 and the unit from Germany Telekom (Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II ), at least there are already reports from users who have their device successfully updated to version 21.303.07.00.00. If one has a E5786 with telecom brand, after the flash, you will get a new firmware with no more branding. Below are the procedure how to update the firmware:

1. download the Huawei E5786 new firmware zip and unzip all programs on PC
2. Connect Router with USB cable and at least 10% battery(Better more !!)
3. Starting the firmware .exe file with admin rights and follow the instructions
4. also flash GUI. exe

After about 5 minutes of process, the flash should be completed. Some devices may require a Pin code to flash, it can be generated using IMEI number on relevant websites – here you should try Google shortly. I personally have no customized E5786 with telecom brand to test, but in the above linked LTE Forum, there are some opinions that are positive, so I decided to publish the guide here. Nevertheless:

Huawei E5573 has a removable battery of 1500mAh, and the operating time is about 6 hours. Of course you can also charge the hotspot during use and thus extend the working time. You can use the E5573 directly via the USB interface, a software needs to be installed, only one driver. The operation completely without the battery is not possible.

As a mobile hotspot, the Huawei E5573 could provide the wirelesss connection to mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops. The Huawei E5573 uses either wireless on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, by default the connection to 2.4 GHz is preconfigured. In particular, at events and fairs, however, we recommend the use of 5 GHz WLAN, because this frequency range is usually utilized significantly less. WiFi 802.11ac is not supported.

The web interface of the Huawei E5573 is already known by many previous devices and differs neither in design nor in functionality from previous releases. On the home page, which can be accessed via the IP address 192.168.8.1, there is a good overview of all the relevant connection parameters. Furthermore, there is the possibility to send and receive text messages as well as to update the firmware from the Web. In the settings you can configure, for example, the wireless connection, the often used guest network by some users. Also in the mobile settings, it’s lacking an important feature: you can not adjust “LTE only” or “3G only” in Huawei E5573, but simply turn on and off the possibility of LTE. This was achieved significantly better than Huawei previous models.

The control and configuration can be done via the web interface in the browser, there is also the Huawei Mobile WiFi HiLink app as an application for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. Only Windows Phone users will unfortunately empty, for this operating system, there is no special app.

The Huawei E5573 is a good small LTE router, which you can buy without hesitation. Although the device has no LTE Advanced Cat6, but is still fast enough for most users and is suitable also excellent, with dual-band Wi-Fi for fairs and events. The replaceable battery and the terminals for an external antenna also among the plus points. As an alternative, for example, the Huawei E5377 and Netgear Aircard 782s(with Display), both devices are roughly the same price. Those who prefer to have a slightly stronger battery, should refer to Huawei E5770 or Huawei E5377T. Alcatel has unveiled a compact LTE Cat6 hotspot– the Alcatel One Touch Link 4G+ Y900 at MWC in February 2015. Now, the machine is finally available in stores after 9 months. As we had introduced before, the similar model Huawei E5786 has similar feature as Alcatel Y900. However, there is no display and connections for an external antenna in the Y900. In this article, you could see the full review about our test for Alcatel One Touch Link 4G+.

The Alcatel Y900 comes in a small cardboard box. In the box, there is a power supply for charging Alcatel Y900. The unit is supplied only with a USB cable, which can then be converted in conjunction with a standard USB power adapter for full charger. Alternatively, the router could also charge through the USB port from a computer or notebook.

The first impression of the Alcatel Y900: the router is equipped with 89 x 62 x 11.5 millimeters and a weight of only 88 grams including the battery. The build quality is good, the back cover on the battery is secure and can be removed quickly in order to insert the SIM card and optional memory card. Alcatel One Touch Link 4G+ Y900 has two colors: dark gray or white.

The operation is carried out via a web interface in the browser, as it is known by virtually every other router models. Alternatively, there is also an application for iOS and Android, so you can control the Y900 hotspot over an app. This works reliably, because the software is easy to understand and react quickly. A special praise has earned by Alcatel for the design, app and web interface look fresh and the functions can be easily distinguished from each other by different colors. This new software is already available from Alcatel Y858 for several months.

In the Web interface, you can see statistics such as online time and data volume consumed for use. In the settings, the wireless connection can be configured to change the password or modify the wireless network name. Also the settings for cellular connection can be done; usually, this is not necessary since the Alcatel Y900 automatically recognizes the network provider based on the inserted SIM card and the configuration performs automatically.

The Alcatel Y900 4G+ is based on a modern chipset with support for LTE category 6, so that up to 300 MBit/s in the downlink and up to 50 Mbit/s can be achieved in the uplink. Of course, the Alcatel Y900 is also backwards compatible with UMTS (up to 42.2 Mbit/s) and GSM including EDGE. In the test at 1800 and 2600 MHz (Carrier Aggregation was active), I reached up to 180 MBit/s in the downlink, which is at least already times faster than LTE Cat4 (up to 150 Mbit/s).

The reception and transmission performance of the Alcatel Y900 is good. But if you are at location of low signal strength, you’d probably want an external antenna. Unfortunately, there are no connections for such an external antenna, probably due to cost.

The Alcatel Y900 runs WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n/ac at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Up to 32 users can be connected to the router simultaneously, which already has a huge advantage in comparison with other mobile hotspots, because in other devices, a maximum of 8 to 15 users can be provided an Internet connection at the same time. The competitor Huawei E5786 has the function to work as a wireless extender but the Alcatel Y900 can not offer this. Even with the safety, the manufacturer Alcatel provides the Y900 hotspot from the factory without wireless encryption, so you should establish immediately a password so that no strangers can go online via the router.

The battery has a capacity of about 1,800 mAh and thus provides a runtime of about 5 hours. This is not particularly good, but the battery is removable, you can easily add a second or third battery and thus extend the duration accordingly. According to Alcatel, there is a version available with even a 3,600 mAh capacity. However, it seems not yet been available and of course you need a new cover for the back because the battery with 3600 mAh is likely to be considerably thicker than the original.

The Alcatel One Touch Link 4G+ Y900 is one of the fastest mobile LTE hotspots that are available at present. It provides a fast modem, fast WLAN and fast USB 3.0.The design with the large-area LED displays is simple and yet succeeded. Connectors for an external antenna is missing unfortunately. But if you simply looking for a fast and future-proof mobile LTE hotspot, Alcatel Y900 would never make you disappointed.

As an alternative, we would also recommend Netgear AC790S and the Huawei E5786. Both units feature an LTE Advanced Cat6 modem, a strong battery, terminals for an external antenna and a display, but a little bit more expensive than the tested here Alcatel Y900.

Following the Huawei E5 classic design, Huawei E5577 looks like the predecessor models such as E5776, E5372, E5377. The E5577 LTE MiFi is in white or black color. It’s now already available for many network providers in Asia and Europe. As the second generation of LTE category 4 mobile hotspot, we will have a look at what’s improved in the new pocket router.

The Huawei E5577 looks smarter than its predecessors, perhaps because it becomes thinner. The body material is made of plastic but touch feel good. On the front, there is Huawei logo and power button which are located at the two sides of the 1.45 TFT LCD screen. On the top side, there is “Menu” button while the USB port and connectors for external antenna are on the bottom side.

The back cover could be removed for battery change. Open the back cover, we can see there are two slots for SIM card and MicroSD storage card. At the left side of the slot, there is a label where the model number, SSID, WiFi key (password), IMEI & S/N number are printed.

After the SIM card and battery is inserted in the E5577 LTE MiFi, press the power button on the front and the E5577 will fast boot in seconds. Huawei E5577 is still using standard 6-pin SIM card. Usually, the device will automatically configure and connect to network in a couple of minutes. But the E5577 will not do that, user need setup the router manually. You can log in the Huawei Mobile WiFI APP though smartphone or via web browser in PC to do that.

When the Huawei Mobile WiFi E5577 is working, user can see many information from the screen such as the network providers, SSID, WiFi key, signal strength, SMS unread, battery status and WiFi connected users. Like other Huawei E5 pocket WiFi, Huawei E5577 could support up to 10 wireless users to access internet simultaneously. And one extra one could be connected with USB.

With LTE Category 4 technology, Huawei E5577 could achieve downlink speed to 150mbps and uplink speed to 50Mbps. When LTE network is not available, it can switch to 3G UMTS or 2G GSM networks. On 3G network, the peak download speed could reach 43.2Mbps. The E5577 could support WLAN 802.11b/g/n with dual-band. Today, we present you one of the smallest mobile hotspots from Bouygues Telecom, the Huawei E5577s–321, we will say E5577 instead in the article below.

The Huawei E5577 is a little smaller than its big brother the Huawei E5786 (4G+), a bit thicker than its little brother the Huawei E5372 (4G), the E5577 is distinguished by the gray color of its edge, but it looks very similar to the other huawei hotspots. The body is in black or white, made of plastic. The E5577 is very slim and it fits in your hand or your pocket. But it’s a pity that Huawei did not set a hole for a strap in the body.

But what can the Huawei E5577 do for users? It can be a good partner in below the situations:

• Work as theWiFi hotspot: take the air 3G/4G around you to turn on Wi-Fi, so you can connect up to 10 devices. This is the classic feature “hotspot”, when you’re in the middle of somewhere and under 3G/4G network coverage.

For the Wi-Fi you have the choice between 2.4GHz (classical, old, but a little crowded) or 5GHz (later, to book in for more powerful). You choose according to the devices you want to connect.

The Wi-Fi in 5GHz, up to 300Mbit/s could be achieved if one parameter bandwidth in 2 channel (40MHz) instead of one (20MHz). At 2.4GHz, the Wi-Fi link is up to 150MBit/s. It’s already good enough.

2) Work as a 4G USB modem: take these 3G/4G mobile network waves, and connect via a USB cable to a computer, then acting as a USB modem. In reality, it is a type of “Hilink” modem which does not require installation of drivers, and is managed through a web interface in a browser: the advantage is that the ignition the connection is very fast, takes seconds.

3) Work as the Wi-Fi repeater: Wi-Fi make the waves around you, open access point, and share them with up to 10 devices: the “repeater” function or “spreader” (called WiFi Extender). Useful to save its mobile data quota when in a “connected” environment. When Wi-Fi is not available, the E5577 (which is small but very clever) automatically switches to the mobile connection.

4) Work as the backup battery bank: with a small USB micro-B on both sides (not supplied with the device) or the micro-B USB/USB 2.0 supplied to your smartphone or tablet, you can recharge your valuable equipment to communicate. The “battery” function does not prevent normal operation of the hotspot.

Huawei E5577 Features

First surprise unpacking: Huawei E5577 battery is huge and removable, almost twice as thick as that of the E5372! The listed capacity is 3000mAH, against 1.780mAH for the E5372, and is likely to last, according to the mobile network used, 400 or 600 hours standby and up to 12 hours of continuous use. This is a Lithium-ion polymer. In practice, 12 hours are for use 4G (with one machine connected).

Second pleasant surprise: unlike the interface in the E5372, Huawei E5577 offers that of a connection interface with a login/password. We can change the password at the earliest to avoid problems.

Third pleasant surprise: the connection statistics and appliance consumption are there! A special section of the interface allows you to monitor what’s going on, connected, and for how long. If you are not happy to see such a machine, you can block it by its MAC address. It is also cool to set its “data plan” for the monthly statistics. That’s useful, and it was sorely lacking on the E5372!

And fourth major positive surprise: the E5577 seems to better capture the mobile network than its predecessor the Huawei E5372. E5577 is much more stable when it changes place. In all cases, the difference is very clear: the connection is stable, we can walk with little fear of losing the network.

In my test, I got 4G 3 bars, 50Mbps downlink (4G) indoor and 30Mbps upstream, almost as well as the E5786 4G+ in the same place. With an external antenna (MIMO 2×2), which plugs into two small TS-9 ports under a small hatch on the front edge, it will reach comfortable DL 70Mbps/UL 30Mbps. This is a feature common to all the Huawei hotspots models I tested.

Other features

• The function WPS(with PIN), which allows to connect to the hotspot without entering the security key is present.

• The micro SD card is classically now available on connected devices that can download or upload files on the storage card (the SD card is not supplied). We can watch a movie stored on the hotspot from their smartphone, or listen to music. The data exchanged over the LAN obviously not count against the quota of “mobile data”, as they are traded in Wi-Fi.

• The link to the customer “My Account” on the home page of the hotspot, works!

• The E5577 is not simlock. That’s fine, we can compare the performance of mobile networks.

• The battery indicator: 4 bars, so 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, and the empty indicator that flashes when it recharge, rather than a specific percentage, I mean. It always shocks me to go from 25% to 0% without going through the box 15%, which is the moment you should recharge the battery.

• The inability to change the login name “administrator” and it will remain “admin”.

• The selection of network parameters (2G, 3G, LTE) and Network Mode (Auto/Manual), less intuitive and less accurate than previous models which can only shoot 4G (LTE), you can not choose 2G or 3G.

• The E5577 hotspot IP is 192.168.1.1: The E5372 and E5786 were 192.168.8.1, fortunately, you can easily change this address.

• The PIN entry screen, which always encourages box “Remember PIN” … thus disabling the PIN code request in the next ignition or next connecting a guest.We would like a safer screen.

In summary, the Huawei E5577 is a more complete version of the E5372: it has the same features – and even more, its interface is more complete, the data connection is more efficient and Wi-Fi connection faster. With a large battery capacity, it goes for a long session of work or leisure. With slim pocket size, Huawei E5577 is a good mobile router.
